First, what is the Hot Wheels exchange? I mean, how am I not better versed on this? There are people here who are going to call me out for not knowing, friendly friends who've contributed to mine own collection. Thing is, I want in.
Info me, Oppo!
Second, I just discovered that modifying HW and other's in the scale is an actual thing and I want to, like, try that. Seems like an easy hobby between the hours of work, wrenching and baby-wrangling. I've seen there are videos and websites but lots of opinions on what works. Truth is, I'd rather trust you all.
Tanks.
Here, have a wheel that's hot...

I'm new to it too (and haven't participated yet), but people have pointed me in this direction:

To put simply, you post a car you have for trade. Someone then posts something they have to trade. If interested, you leave a form of contact (like an email but broken up like "example at gmail . com") and then go from there. It really is all about trust. I have done it about 5 times and it works great.
I take a small padded envelope (I get three packs at the dollar store) and put 4 stamps on it. Worked every time!
It is really fun since different areas get different models or have different markets (so some areas sell certain ones much easier). I love it!

It's a great little thing we got going. It's the best way at getting rid of doubles for stuff that you don't have.

Customizing is a piece of cake. I've been doing with varied degrees of success in varied degrees of complexity practically ever since I started collecting.
For example, that engine wasn't there when this Nova was new (it's a 427 donated from a Johnny Lightning 1969 Corvette ZL1) and those mags look much better than the stock rally wheels.
What you'll need before getting started is an adequate space to work and some tools. Space isn't much a problem if you're starting small, with wheelswaps and such, but it can become a problem when you start respraying cars, since you'll want to do a lot of cars at once to save primer and clear coats. For now a desk that can be easily cleaned from metal and plastic scraps should do.
As for tools, you'll need a drill, preferably cordless, a set of drill tips for taking the car apart and some sort of adhesive or screws to put the car back together when you're done. I use... Well, I use the metric system, so a few conversions ight be required, but I use a 3.0 mm drill for the guide hole, a 4.0 mm drill to bust the rivet open, and a 2.0 mm drill to make holes for the screws (screws are much better than JB Weld or epoxy because they let you dismantle the car again if you feel like it)

My Canadianess approves of your metricocity.
Would it be, do you think, too much to ask of you to put together a comprehensive, detailed and completely free-to-the-public guide on the dismantle and remantling of 1/64's? Haha.
But seriously, thanks. I'm really going to do this, I'm darn sure.
If you know of any reliable sources of info out there on the wide world webs, I'd be much appreciated if you were to edify me.
Thanks Ace!

Haha, no problem, I'm glad my metricness wasn't an issue for once! I'll see if I can put that guide together this weekend. I've avoided soing so, since these things usually require pictures, and all I have is a potato, but my folks will probably stop by for a visit Friday and I can then borrow their camera.
Now I just need to find a good car to work on...
EDIT: Oh yeah, sources of info, I think the best place to go is the Customization boards at hotwheelscollectors.com. Lots of good people there, and lots of good threads to draw inspiration and tips from. Just make sure to do a search for beginner's tips before asking, there's a running joke on the boards about that, hahaha....

Very used to that phenomenon. The tendency of the newbie to ask a question which has already been answered a dozen times is inexplicable - how a person can think that a group of people may have the answer, yet his question is so unique as to need immediate resolution, is beyond me.
I'll check the site out, however.
Is it common to sacrifice the mundane in the name of making something special?

Someones phone. That person may be a drunk, blind invalid, but that's no reason to discredit his artistic ambitions...
... hold on; sorry, what was that?
Okay, I'm being told that his ambitions are autistic, not artistic. Pardon me, folks.

I just like to play around, so here is the Heli toy I also found but couldn't make it "work" for me.
Just have fun with it, whatever it is.

Having owned many from way back when... Japanese makes the best die cast 1/64's. I remember having Tomy's with movable pop-up headlights on a Ferrari. Of course, that's like 30-some years ago. Right now I look at the quality of modern die casts, and sigh. I've had Matchbox, Majorette, Hot Wheels, Tomys, and others.

Jqj213 said it well. The exchange is about trust. We call it a gentleman's agreement. As he said, you post up some pics and if you want to trade you state so. A person will then post up an offer and if agreed, one person puts up their contact information. Once the other person writes it down the previous comment needs to be dismissed so personal info isn't all over the place. Contact is made and info exchanged. Very easy.
The original Exchange thread I made is only different in that we will just post individual times instead of back on the original thread. Go back and read the original post to get a more detailed look at the rules/process. It has worked great so far.
